Real-World Examples of Hot-Dip Galvanizing in Action
Every year the American Galvanizers Association recognizes outstanding applications of
hot-dip galvanizing (HDG) with their Excellence in Galvanizing Award in several
categories. Here is a sample of some of our numerous AGA award entries:

Martin Midstream RPG Unloading Facility
Baytown, TX, USA
The Martin Midstream Rail Terminal has the capacity to
unload 100 refinery propylene rail cars per day. As the
terminal unloads the cars, it sends the product into
storage or directly into pipelines supplying the nearby
propane/propylene facility which is part of the world’s
largest NGL fractionation complex and features
approximately 100 million barrels of liquid storage
capacity. The low maintenance, durability and cost
effectiveness of HDG helped make the project a success.
Goodyear Ballpark and Recreational Complex
Goodyear, AZ, USA
The Goodyear Ballpark is part of a 75 years master plan
incorporating walking paths, retail shops, and picnic
areas. The developer wanted to take a big league
approach to developing a Cactus league facility. The
architects used a combination of wood, concrete and
galvanized steel for a clean impressive look that was cost
effective and very low maintenance. The ballpark is used
by two major league teams, the Cincinnati Reds and the
Cleveland Indians. Distinctive features include free stand
HDG steel awnings with fabric shades that provide
shelter from the sun down the base lines.
The 10,000 seat, $108 million stadium will provide
sports entertainment for generations.
Ron Venderly Family Pedestrian Bridge
Fort Wayne, IN USA
This bridge provided a vital link between the main
campus at Indiana - Purdue University at Fort Wayne and
its west campus. The $4.2 million pedestrian bridge
provides a new way for joggers, walkers, bicyclists and
others to cross the St. Joseph River. The bridge also
provides a method for student athletes to get to the
Hefner Soccer Fields and for hospitality students to get
to classes. HDG played a major role in meeting the
environmentally friendly goals of IPFW and also made
the St. Joseph River part of the River Greenway System.
Pearsall Power Plant
Pearsall, Texas USA
The Pearsall Power Plant is part of the South Texas
Electric Cooperative. The 202.5 MW Power Plant is
valued at $100 million and serves 8 distribution
cooperatives which provide power to 170,000 members
in 65 South Texas counties. The plant is expected to run
about 4000 hours per year. By calling on resources such
as HDG there will be little down time for maintenance.
The plant is fueled by natural gas adding to the long
list of sustainable attributes including HDG steel.
Prairie View Dairy
Muleshoe, Texas USA
The Prairie View Dairy used HDG for their new facility
because they needed the most durable cost-effective and
low-maintenance corrosion protection offered. The dairy
has the capacity to milk 6,000 cows per day and produce
25,000 gallons of milk. USDA regulations mandate that
no corrosion exist anywhere at a dairy. The stalls, gates
and the barn itself used tubular steel providing no
opportunity for birds or dust to settle. All the bi-products
from daily wash down are fully contained and recycled
making Prairie View Dairy a sustainable business of the
future. HDG helps make it all possible.
University of Minnesota TCF Bank Stadium
Minneapolis, Minnesota USA
When the wrecking ball took out the old Memorial
Stadium, the debate began about the return of Gopher
football to the U of M campus. Corporate sponsorship
made the dream become a reality and the stadium began
to take shape. The role of HDG was critical in meeting
the construction requirements of low maintenance, cost
effectiveness and above all recyclability. The combined
use of conventional galvanized steel and duplex coated
steel met the aesthetic needs (school colors) and the
durability requirements. The 50,000 seat stadium will be
a role model for other NCAA facilities and HDG was a
major factor.
